Is SNL desperate these days?

I have been ripping on SNL for years. The writing has been terrible and the skits seem to always go for the shock effect. We can only take so much of the "overly-affectionate family". Another annoying thing about SNL is that any skit that is relatively funny, they beat to death (the one with Whats up with That). I have to say, last night I thoroughly enjoyed that episode with betty white. She did a great job but what made it even better was throwing in some of the cast members and skits that were on the show at its peak. However, this in my opinion was a desperate move. It basically just goes to show you that the writers in the 90's were ten times funnier than the people they have there now. What do you think?
