Should I get a new Snowboard?

I have a ride control snowboard I bought last winter on craigslist. It is not in very good shape, the edges are dull, and it hasn't been waxed since I bought it, and it is at least 5 years old from what I can tell. My friend has a k2 brigade 1.5 years old that he has never used that I can get for 170. Would it be an upgrade, or could i get the same performance by getting my current board tuned? I'm also a beginner /intermediate rider if that helps.
